The Great Commission and Church Marketing: Why “Go” Requires Strategy

The Great Commission and Church Marketing: Why “Go” Requires Strategy

The Question I Hear All the Time

In my nearly decade-long career, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve been asked, “So, what do you do for a living?” When I reply, “I work in church marketing,” I almost always get the same puzzled response:

“Why in the world does the church need marketing?”

The Church Marketing Problem

The truth is, many churches struggle with marketing. And that’s ironic—because we carry the most life-changing message of all time.

For some, the idea of marketing for churches feels wrong. They believe the Good News should spread organically—without Facebook ads, social media for churches, or well-produced videos. They don’t see the value in having a church communication plan or investing in church growth strategies.

The Great Commission: Our Marketing Mandate

But here’s the reality: Jesus Himself gave us a marketing mandate through the Great Commission. I call it the cornerstone Scripture for church marketing:

19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” - Matthew 28:19-20 (NIV)

The keyword here? Go.
You can’t go without reaching. You can’t reach without communicating. And you can’t communicate effectively without a strategy.

Why Marketing is Biblical

Church marketing is simply the first step in fulfilling the Great Commission. People cannot be baptized or discipled unless they first hear—and truly understand—the Good News. That’s where I come in.

I help churches develop digital marketing strategies, faith-based branding, and outreach plans so they can confidently connect with the people God has called them to serve. From building a strong church brand to using social media to share the Gospel, I guide ministries in creating intentional, effective, and Spirit-led outreach.

Your Mission Deserves Excellence

When it comes to church growth strategies, “just posting a flyer” isn’t enough.
We’re called to go—strategically, intentionally, and with excellence—so more people can encounter Jesus, join a community of believers, and grow in faith.
